Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday, criticised the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole’s new minimum wage of N25,000 proposed for workers from May, describing it as a “greek gift”.

Oshiomhole had announced the new wage during the 2016 May Day celebration in Benin City on Sunday.

State chairman of the party, Dan Orbih, in a statement made available to journalists, said the increase came rather late.

He said the number of the governor’s political appointees has continued to increase while that of civil servants has been on the downward trend.

Orbih also described the increment as, hasty and a betrayal of trust on the part of the state government, accusing Oshiomhole of announcing the increment at a time the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was negotiating a N56,000 minimum wage for civil servants.

“This is a Greek gift to Edo workers, considering the fact that the governor has continually neglected workers’ welfare and treated them with disdain before now. Who does not know the motive behind this fake gesture that is coming at a time every state in the federation is facing economic recession,? he asked.

According to the PDP, “As at the time of the windfall, he didn’t pay workers for many months. Right now, local government workers are being owed over six months salary. Retirees’ pensions and entitlements are also not being paid under Oshiomhole’s watch.”
