PDP Chairmanship Pits Gulak Against Juta

GulakSELF-APOINTED national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Gulak, has threatened to resist fresh moves to appoint somebody from the North East to take over, just as the Adamawa chapter of the party has endorsed Ambassador Wilberforce‎ Juta, for the position.

In a letter signed by its chairman, Chief Hamman Joda Madaki, the Adamawa State Working Committee of the party, urged all party leaders and members from the entire North East Zone to support the consensus move being built for Juta, a pioneer member of the party in the state.

The letter, which was also sent to the acting national chairman, Uche Secondus, noted that the decision to support Juta was taken after‎‎ due consultations with party stakeholders in the state.‎

But speaking through his aide, Bernard Mikko, Gulak told journalists yesterday in Abuja that whatever decision taken by the various organs of the party would be “null and void and of no effect whatsoever” except he is accepted in line with court judgment.

He argued that the 14-day order given by the High Court to the acting national chairman, Uche Secondus, to vacate the seat had expired without the party consulting to fashion out a way of picking another person from the region.

“Party leaders and members in the North East were in a dilemma over the issue of replacement of the national chairman until Gulak made a case. The PDP leaders have turned themselves into administrative officers,” he said.

He maintained that any attempt to nominate another person besides Gulak would amount to illegality and contempt of the court, even as he condemned plans by the North East zonal chairman to send a replacement from the region.

He noted that INEC had been duly informed of all the developments, stressing that he is the only person to preside over the NEC, BoT and the National Caucus meeting slated for this week.
