Face-off between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State recorded a twist, yesterday, following renewed threat to demolish the secretariat of the opposition PDP.

After the defection of Governor Bello Matawalle to the APC, the PDP said it relocated its secretariat to a different property, which has now been marked for demolition.

The PDP also accused APC in the state of a plot to use state apparatus to obliterate it and stifle its constitutionally guaranteed rights in the state.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, yesterday, urged the public to note that “since Matawalle left our fold to the fizzling APC, his agents have been using compromised agencies of the state to tyrannise our PDP members and other well-meaning citizens of Zamfara to cow them to submission.”

Ologbondiyan added: “It is imperative to state that after the defection of the governor, faithful members of our party immediately worked out strategies to reposition the party to effectively play the role of the main opposition in the state.

“This included acquiring another befitting property to serve as PDP secretariat in the state, as our former secretariat was converted to an APC office after the governor defected.”

He added that soon after moving into the property, the landlord terminated the rentage. Upon investigation, it was discovered that an agency of the state government had threatened the landlord with the demolition of the property should he continue to accommodate the PDP, the party alleged.

HOWEVER, the APC has faulted the claim by Sen. Kabiru Marafa that the Zamfara State ward congress did not hold on Saturday, November 13, 2021.

APC, in a statement by its caretaker committee secretary, Sen. John Akpanudoedehe, maintained that the ward congresses took place in line with due process.

It noted: “After evaluation and consultations, the committee, in a letter dated November 10, 2021, was okayed to proceed with the conduct of the Zamfara ward congresses on Saturday, November 13, 2021, in which Sen. Marafa participated.

“This had nothing to do with the 21 days notice for the conduct of wards, councils and state congresses in Zamfara earlier sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which subsists.”

The party frowned on Marafa’s “uninformed and misguided” position on the conduct of the ward congresses, urging him and his cohorts not to reduce the political issues to a contest of personalities but submit to party supremacy and internal dispute resolution structure adequately provided for by the APC constitution.
