Plight of IDPs take centre stage at MWAN biennial conference

The Lagos State branch of Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) will between December 3rd and 4th hold its 19th biennial conference with focus on the health and socio-economic plight of internal displaced persons, especially in the northeastern region of the country currently being ravaged by Boko Haram attacks.

Explaining why conference will focus on the IDPs and the state of their health, an official of MWAN, Dr Modupe Abiola said that  the need to proffer solutions to the health challenges the IDPs face in their different forced abodes and camps was important to the association.

“Terrorism in Nigeria has led to the destabilization of a lot of families. This set of people of all ages has suddenly found themselves devoid of the very basic necessities of life. They are exposed to health risks.

“The Medical Women Association of Nigeria therefore wishes to frontally address the health issues of this group of people and also suggest possible acute solutions to the problems during our 19th biennial conference,” Dr Abiola said.

The conference which will hold at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, will also focus, among others, on how to effectively control infectious diseases; achievement of desired goals in controlling vaccine preventable diseases; obesity in children and contemporary application in management of dental care.
