The Nigeria Police Force has filed an eight-count criminal charge against Adeniyi Adeyemi, the convener of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), over allegations bordering on forgery, impersonation and related offences.
The charge, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleges that Adeyemi falsely presented himself as the Director-General of the council using forged government documents, including an alleged appointment letter purportedly issued from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President.
According to the charge, Adeyemi and two other defendants are accused of using forged official documents to establish and operate the purported council, opening multiple bank accounts in its name and seeking official recognition for an agency the Federal Government maintains does not exist.
Investigators further allege that forged documents were used in attempts to obtain official privileges and facilitate the operations of the council.
The Presidency had earlier dismissed the council as fictitious, insisting that no such agency was created by the Federal Government and that no appointment was issued to Adeyemi. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the case followed petitions submitted by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, after reports of forged official documents surfaced.
The matter is expected to come up before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the defendants will answer to the charges. Adeyemi has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that his appointment was legitimate.
