Police arrest labour leaders in Ogun

The on-going indefinite strike by Ogun State government workers got to a disturbing dimension yesterday as two labour leaders who were at the Governor’s Office, Abeokuta with others to monitor the exercise were arrested and handcuffed and taken to the Police Station.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa however condemned the Police’s action and ordered their immediate release, which was complied.

All government activities were however paralysed as only very few senior officials reported to duty to offer skeletal services, particularly at the Governor’s office.

Meanwhile the State government has warned the aggrieved workers that it would not pay the workers for the number of days they absented themselves and appealed to them to resume work immediately.

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) ordered the workers to stay at home as a protest against the government’s refusal to honour an agreement it reached with them over the remittance of an alleged deductions from their salaries.

The Secretary to the JNC, Comrade Adebiyi Olusegun in a statement yesterday called on the aggrieved workers to disregard “All machinations of the government to intimidate and coerce them to submission and servitude.”
