Police arrest priest, another over IED manufacturing in Imo
A CRACK team of bomb disposal experts from the Imo State Police Command has arrested a priest of the Pinnacle Church, and another young man for allegedly being in possession of equipment and materials used in manufacturing Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs).
They were arrested on Friday, April 3, at Umuokorika, Ekwereazu, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Council of Imo State.
Parading the suspects before journalists on Thursday at the Imo State Police Command headquarters in Owerri, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), disclosed that the duo- Lord Davidson of Nguru Aboh Mbaise and Eze Charles of Nsukka, Enugu State, are breakaway members of the Movement of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), adding that the kingpin and suspected leader of the group, Eke Obi, escaped on sighting police. He said the search for the escapee was going on by the operatives.
Enwerem said the operatives had gotten a tip- off about the about the “planting and manufacturing” arena by the suspects before they stormed and cordoned the building, arresting the alleged culprits.
He disclosed that the police operatives was led by the Officer-in-charge of the Anti Bomb Disposal Unit in the state, Mr. Omowaye O. Timothy, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
According to him, items recovered from them included a drilling machine, gun-powder, tins of paints, threads, bucket and bore used as shrapnel.
Enwerem stated that the suspects would be arraigned in the court after investigations soon.
“This is the effort of the police to ensure that Imo State is free of IEDs”, the PPRO said.
Fielding questions from journalists, one of the suspects, Lord, said they were members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but denied being in possession of the equipment.
He said the bag containing all the materials were brought in by an elderly person whom he said did not inform him about the content.
