Police arrest sea pirates in Bayelsa during arms purchase

The special anti-kidnapping squad of the Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested five suspected sea pirates, while negotiating to purchase guns in the Yenagoa metropolis.

The suspects, who were apprehended along Okaka area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, according to the Police, were identified as Simon Andrews (31yrs), Clement Ekromone (33yrs),Tari Sapele Gbokumo(33yrs),Tamonokro Sokari(29yrs) and Asime Genewori (34yrs).

The Police also revealed that out of the five suspects, three hail from Gbarain, Yenagoa and Ekeremor communities of the state, while the other two others are from Asari Toru community in Rivers State.

Confirming the arrest, spokesman of the police command, Asimin Butswat, said the suspects were arrested in Yenogoa at about 7.30 pm on March 5.

The police spokesman said “the suspects came to Yenagoa from Rivers State to buy guns. Upon a tip-off, the anti-vice/anti-kidnapping squad arrested the suspects at Okaka road,” he said.

“The sum of N590, 000 was recovered from them and they admitted that the money was meant for the payment of the guns upon delivery. Investigation is ongoing.”
