Police flag off schools protection squad in Osun

The Nigeria Police Force has formally launched the Police Schools Protection Squad for the security of schools and other learning environments in Osun State.

The flag-off took place on Monday during a stakeholders’ forum on the security of schools in Osun State and the training of the Schools Protection Squad.

The squad is tasked with preventing and responding to attacks on student hostels (on/off campus), bullying, molestation or harassment, student kidnapping, and suspicious movements of persons around school areas.

The police emphasised that if the squad delivered effectively, the state government would have to prioritise funding of the initiative and provide necessary protective equipment to security agents.

Speaking at the opening ceremony held in Osogbo, capital of the state, the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, explained that for the next two days, stakeholders will engage in meaningful discussions, share expertise, and explore strategies to enhance the safety and security of schools in the state.

According to the CP, “Even though Osun State is one of the most peaceful states in the country, there are some pockets of crisis in our schools that need attention.

“In this seminar, we will deliberate on critical issues, best practices, and innovative solutions to address the security challenges facing our schools. I am confident that the insights and experiences shared will empower us to develop effective strategies for safeguarding our educational institutions.”

In his speech, the Commissioner of Police, SPS, Force Headquarters, Abayomi Shogunle, stated that the initiative aimed to address the serious challenges posed by conflicts and insecurity to school safety.
