Police intensifies enforcement against illegal plate numbers, others in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has intensified enforcement against vehicles operating with illegal plate numbers, misuse of dealer (temporary) plates, and the unauthorised use of sirens and amber lights.

The command also commenced intelligence-led checks on vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid, or improperly affixed number plates, as well as those unlawfully using dealer plates.

Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta on Wednesday, saying that the decision was part of the command’s efforts to safeguard lives, prevent crime, and enhance public safety across the state.

Babaseyi said that such vehicles are often exploited to facilitate criminal activities, posing serious threats to public safety.

He said that to ensure professional and lawful enforcement, the command had deployed specialised units, including the Motor Traffic Department, Monitoring Unit, and X-Squad, for operational oversight.

The police spokesperson said that the Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers are supervising activities within their jurisdictions to guarantee fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to approved operational guidelines.

However, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, called on the members of the public to cooperate with officers, comply with traffic and safety regulations, and avoid patronising suspicious vehicles, urging them to use only recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points.

Ogunlowo reassured the residents of the state that the enforcement was aimed at preventing crime, maintaining public order, and protecting lives, thereby upholding the rights and dignity of all road users.

He appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activities or security concerns through the Command’s emergency lines: Gateway Shield (General Complaints Line – Toll Free): 0800 000 9111; Emergency Numbers: 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369, and 0708 497 2994.
