A traffic warden in Port Harcourt, has expressed disappointment at the Nigeria Police Force over the poor treatment of wardens in the state.

The warden, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said discrimination and marginalisation of warden are discouraging them from performing optimally.

He alleged that there has been no training and promotion of traffic wardens in the state since 2008 when the last batch of wardens was recruited.

He said: “The police have seen us as very inferior and they do not promote us as when due, from 2008 till date, there is no recruitment and as I am talking to you, the traffic warden strength in Rivers State now is not up to 150 personnel, tell me how can that number tackle the traffic situation in the state”?

The warden also stressed that general duty Policemen are not expected to be on the road to control traffic especially with the establishment of the traffic warden service.

“They will leave the crime they are supposed to be going after and you will see them all over the road dragging traffic points with the traffic warden.

“Their job is very versatile. So, why should they put so much interest in traffic, we have tried several ways for them to allow us to be on our own, at least to be autonomous, “ he lamented.
