Police still searching for man who jumped into FESTAC lagoon

The Lagos State police command has intensified search for one Bayode Ahmed Lawal, who jumped into the lagoon through the link bridge between FESTAC Town and Amuwo Odofin at the weekend.

Lawal, an Industrial and Applied Chemistry graduate of the University of Ilorin, had on Saturday, raced to the bridge and to the chagrin of all around, jumped into the brackish water and disappeared.

As at 5:30p.m. yesterday, efforts made by local divers and boat owners to fish his body out had proven abortive.

According to sources, he had gone out with some friends when he suddenly started acting strangely by rolling on the floor. When his friends tried to know what was wrong, he was said to have suddenly jumped up, raced towards the bridge.

Although his friends gave him a chase, they could not reach him until he had gotten to the bridge and jumped in without saying a word. It was gathered that he had been going through some psychological trauma.

Another source said he might have been fed up with life. Bayo left behind a single mother and his other siblings.

Lagos police spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said the command has mobilised policemen to the scene for his body to be retrieved.

“The incident was reported and policemen were mobilised to the scene.

Effort is on to rescue the victim while investigation continues,” he said. .
