Polio eradication: Rotary renews commitment to sustain zero tolerance in Kano

The President of Rotary club of Kano, District 9125, Rotn. Opeyemi Emmanuel Akinfaderin, has renewed plan to strengthen fight against polio eradication and other health challenges in Kano.

The 62nd district president of the club made the commitment at the weekend, during his investiture ceremony in Kano.

He declared that the battle which reduced 200 endemic countries to just two, Pakistan and Afghanistan, would never resurrected in Kano.

Before Nigeria finally received her green bill of health as Polio free nation last year, Kano was the epic centre of the dreaded virus. However, Rotary intervention in collaboration with government has reduced the menace to the barest minimum.

Rotn. Opeyemi, who spoke after receiving the mantle of leadership for the 2021/2022 tenure, cited four areas where the district humanitarian activities would focus to include education, health, women empowerment and social services.

The new president, who disclosed an estimated bill of over N6million for execution of projects, emphasised plans to distribute instructional materials to schools, drill boreholes, distribute delivery kits and construct a laboratory centre.

Opeyemi, who said he considered the leadership position bestowed on him as opportunity to serve humanity, restated his readiness to face the challenges ahead. He solicited support, commitment and services of members to succeed.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, extended the good will of Kano State government to support the humanitarian activities of Rotary club under the new president.

The deputy governor, who is a prestige member of the Rotary club, disclosed the readiness of government to sponsor an agricultural project intervention under Rotary project to empower residents.

The Chairman of the investiture, who is the Chief Operating Officer of Silvex International Limited, Alh. Abubakar Garba Ibrahim, urged the club to stimulate awareness on the selfless services being rendered especially to less privileged in other to grow quality membership.

Abubakar, who donated N1 million for the 2020/2021 humanitarian projects, urged well meaning individuals to equally join hands with the club to make society a better place.

The investiture witnessed conferment of vocational and merit award presented to prominent personalities, including, Abubakar Garba Ibrahim, COO Silvex International; Lorisa Kabir, Proprietress Garden Playgroup Schools; Alh. Kasim Adeniran, Jaiz bank, among others.
