Politicking should be simplified for women, Queen Moremi pleads

Queen Moremi Ajasoro of Ife, Grace Akinwale, has urged governments and politicians to make politicking simpler for women to participate.

The 22-year-old graduate of Psychology, who was crowned last December, stated this in a chat with The Guardian, at the sidelines of the 2022 valedictory/thanksgiving and award of Holy Family Schools, Ijegun Community, Alimosho Local Council of Lagos State, where she was special guest of honour.

She said: “The major political parties should give room for women to participate in politics. We hardly see women in politics these days. I like the fact that few are coming up; the likes of Tonto Dike and Funke Akindele as deputy governorship candidates in Rivers and Lagos states. There is also a female governorship candidate in a northern state.

“They should, please, allow women to participate. I heard that the politicians meet in the middle of the night. They can meet during the day so that married women can attend.”

“No responsible woman would want to leave her husband’s house at 3:00 a.m. for political meetings. They should do it in such a way that women could also participate in politics.”

The queen, while speaking with the graduands, said there is no short cut to success, as there’s no room for malpractice in life’s exams. She debunked the popular street saying that “education is a scam,” noting that even those propagating such, always go back to study.

She added that those who defraud others waste the money in frivolities. After watching the pupils’ performances, including drama, music and news bulletin, she said the performances were well-organised.

“This shows that the pupils, from nursery to secondary, are well taught,” she added. Urging parents not to relent in supporting their children, no matter their academic performance, she noted that training of the child starts from the home.

Head Teacher of Holy Family Schools, Brian David, who represented the proprietor at the event, remarked: “We celebrate these children and thank God on their behalf because trouble looms for tomorrow’s generation. So, we need to bring these children up properly.

“Queen Moremi loves education; that is why she came here all the way from Ife, Osun State, despite that a coronation is going on there now.”

Head of Primary, Miss Precious Amaechi, urged the children not to forget their parents when they make it in life. Moremi Ajasoro was a legendary Yoruba queen and folk heroine, fabled to have assisted in the liberation of the Yoruba kingdom of Ife from the neighbouring Ugbo Kingdom. She was reportedly married to Oranmiyan, the son of Oduduwa, the first king of Ife.
