Sen. MAO Ohuabunwa has said that Nigeria can only overcome its health challenges by embracing preventive rather than curative medicine.

Ohuabunwa (PDP-Abia North) made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

He said that many advance countries around the World utilise preventing medicine to keep diseases and illnesses at bay and urged Nigeria to do same.

Ohuabunwa, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases, said that prevention of diseases would be a cardinal focus of the committee.

If we can get the health sector right, definitely our country will be better for it, whatever we do the basic thing is to live healthy, without good health every other thing will not matter.

If you look at the level of people moving abroad for medical treatment, it becomes worrisome that we really need to look at our health system.

You know that in the world now, people are talking about preventive medicine than curative that is why you see an increase in the number of people specialising in community health.
Ensuring that people are immunised and the environments are clean.

“Since they put me there, I believe I have an idea what should be done and I will do my best to support all the agencies that will be under my oversight,” he said.

The senator emphasised that he was not new to the medical profession as he was a medical microbiologist who had worked in various private and government hospitals and health facilities.

NAN reports that Ohuabunwa had sponsored a Bill for the Establishment of cancers centres across Nigeria.

He has also sponsored a motion to look into the difficulties encountered by young doctors in getting placements for their housemanship. (NAN)
