Prioritise nutrition, exercise for healthy ageing, experts tell elders

Health professionals have called on elderly citizens to take charge of their well-being by paying closer attention to what they eat, how they move, and the relationships they maintain, stressing that ageing gracefully requires conscious daily habits and strong community support.

This advice was given during an Elders’ Retreat organised, over the weekend, by Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) at the Dr Abayomi Finnih Recreational Park, where elderly residents participated in health talks, medical screenings, aerobics, games, and recreational activities aimed at promoting physical and mental wellness.

Chairman of the LCDA, Olufunke Rekiya Hassan, while addressing participants at the event, said the retreat was organised to appreciate the elders in the community and remind them that they remain a vital part of the society.

She noted that many elderly people often feel forgotten, and stressed the importance of social interaction, mental wellness, and community bonding in promoting healthy ageing.

“We wanted to create a space where our elders can feel seen, appreciated, and connected. Social interaction is essential for mental health, and this retreat offers a rare opportunity for many of them to come together, relax, and receive medical support,” she said.

The event featured a health talk delivered by Olaniyan Adedoyin, a medical officer from Oregun Primary Health Centre, who emphasised the importance of intentional living among senior citizens.

She advised participants, aged 60 and above, to be more mindful of their diet, daily activities, and emotional well-being.

According to her, “Getting to 60 and above is a privilege, and at that stage of life, you must become very intentional about your health. Watch what you eat, reduce seasoning, consume more vegetables and fruits, and drink plenty of water. Eating late should be avoided and moderate exercise like dancing or walking should become a daily habit.”

Adedoyin cautioned against excessive consumption of carbohydrates and processed foods, recommending natural ingredients and home-cooked meals with minimal seasoning.

She also urged the elderly to maintain proper hygiene, dress comfortably to prevent falls and keep their environment safe and clean.
