Pro-chancellors seek full autonomy for varsities

The Committee of Pro-chancellors of Nigerian federal universities (CPC), is urging the Federal Government to consider granting universities full autonomy to make them function better and avoid incessant strikes by the staff unions.

Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Kimse Okoko who stated this yesterday in Abuja at the CPC 2017 conference, noted that granting autonomy to universities and providing effective administration by key stakeholders are sine qua non for education development.

He noted that Nigerian universities are facing enormous funding problems as a result of the current economic challenges the country is experiencing.

“There is a need for full university autonomy in our system. We have discussed this for many years and we have achieved nothing.

In his remarks, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said despite the economic realities in the country, universities require adequate funding in order to remain relevant.

On his part, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, urged the Committee of CPC to come up with a framework for the funding of tertiary education to augument the statutory sources.
