Property worth millions of naira was razed in three shops yesterday following a fire outbreak at the famous Ladipo plank market, Baale Roundabout, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.

The Guardian learnt that the fire started at about midnight. The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, who confirmed the incident, said the agency received distress calls through its 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at about 12:04 a.m. and activated its Cobra Response Team from Onipanu.

According to him, upon arrival at the scene at 12:42 a.m., responders discovered that a section of the plank market had caught fire. Okunbor said further investigations revealed that the inferno started from a pile of planks due to a power surge and then spread quickly to the three shops.

He stressed that safety measures were activated by members of the multi-agency response teams, led by the LASEMA Response Team (LRT), to safeguard responders at the incident scene during the operation and that no casualties or injuries were recorded in the incident.
