Proprietors chide Oyo govt over school resumption calendar

Private school proprietors in Oyo State, under the auspices of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), yesterday, condemned the school resumption calendar released by the Oyo State Government for the 2020/2021 academic session.

The state’s President of NAPPS, Mr. Kayode Adeyemi, who spoke with The Guardian in Ibadan, said there was no point rushing to a new session when the state failed to finish the last third term.

The state government had on Monday announced September 21, 2020 as the beginning of the 2020/2021 academic session for primary and secondary schools in the state.

Adeyemi, who stated that the development would put the students of the state that would write national examinations at a disadvantage, said: “We would have loved the state government to allow us do the third term the way Kogi, Osun and other states have done. Pushing the students to the next class having lost six months of learning will not speak well for the standard and quality of education we are all thriving to achieve. We were not allowed to finish the third term but asked to rush to a new session. Other states that are doing third term will be at an advantage against us. At the same time, they will be doing the same West
African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) or National Examinations Council (NECO) and when other children are learning, our own students in Oyo State will be eating at home. For us, there is no point rushing to start a new session without finishing the third term of the previous session. That is our perspective of the calendar.”
