Residents of Abudu and five other neighbouring communities, under Evbuobanosa Dukedom in Orhionmwon Council in Edo State, yesterday, restated loyalty to the Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II.

The residents, who held a peaceful protest at the Oba’s palace in Benin, kicked against Prof. Gregory Akenzua, the Enogie (Duke) of Evbuobanosa over alleged disloyalty and rebellion against the Benin monarch.

A statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to Oba of Benin, Iguobaro Osaigbovo, said the protesters, led by Mr. Osayande Samuel, spoke on behalf of the elders of Evbuobanosa community.

According to the statement, the priest said: “We are in Oba’s palace because our enogie joined the former Ogiegbaen in a petition against the Benin palace.

“That action of the Duke is abomination that stands condemned. That is why we are here to inform the palace that we did not author the petition.”

Addressing the protesters on behalf of the Oba, Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin Kingdom, appealed for calm and urged the locals to be law-abiding and shun violence.

Recall that in April 2022, Oba Ewuare II adjusted Evbuobanosa and Abudu communities, which were formerly administered by Akenzua for effective administration.

The Oba also proclaimed Abudu autonomous community and appointed an Odionwere (village head) to administer the area amid the regrouping of certain dukes.
