Lagos State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Sam Egube, has said that re-engineering the public service, as well as citizens’ active participation in governance, are critical to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and driving optimum performance.

He added that the performance, derived through such re-engineering effort, enables national development.

Egube stated this, yesterday, in his paper titled, “Re-engineering the public service for optimal performance,” presented at the yearly public lecture of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management in Nigeria, Delta State branch.

He said public service in the world plays a significant role in transforming government policies and programmes into reality.

He said in most countries, including Nigeria, the performance of the public service could not be separated from the level of development experience in the country, saying that a lot still needs to be done in form of reforms in the public service to achieve optimum performance.

“The public service is mainly conscious and well known for its regulatory and enforcement roles and also its role to provide service to the citizens with excellence and empathy,” he said.

He, however, argued that it is the average quality of the human resources that give meaning to the natural resources.

Egube said that while it may be true that discrimination leaves an undesirable feeling in a human’s mind, performance however discriminates.
