The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has called for restraint following reports linking the recent fire at Singer Market in Kano to a possible explosion from a solar battery system.
 
In a statement signed by its Communications Director, Oisereime Lloyd-Dietake, the association said it was aware of speculation suggesting that a renewable energy installation may have caused the incident.

However, it stressed that the cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed by the relevant authorities.

REAN expressed concern over the incident and extended its sympathies to the traders, businesses, and families affected by the blaze.

“We are deeply concerned about the incident and extend our sincere thoughts to the individuals, businesses, and families affected,” Lloyd-Dietake said, adding that safety remains paramount in the deployment and operation of renewable energy systems across Nigeria.

The association urged the public and the media to avoid drawing conclusions while investigations are ongoing.

“At this time, the cause of the incident has not been officially confirmed by the relevant authorities. We urge the public and media to refrain from speculation while verified facts are being established,” the association said.
 
REAN emphasised that solar power systems, including battery storage components, are safe and reliable when properly designed, installed, and maintained in line with established electrical and safety standards.

It noted that over the years it has championed industry standardisation through the development and promotion of installation guidelines aligned with international best practices, capacity building and structured training for installers and technicians, advocacy for enforcement of technical standards, and collaboration with regulatory authorities to strengthen compliance and consumer protection.

In response to the incident, REAN said it has activated its internal review and incident response mechanism. The process will involve gathering verified facts, engaging technical experts and relevant authorities to investigate the root cause, reviewing compliance with existing standards, and issuing a detailed statement upon conclusion.
