Reps Leader Hails Buhari’s Decision On NASS
Deputy minority leader of the House of Representatives, Abdulrahman Suleiman Kawu, has hailed the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari’s decision not to interfere in the process that would elect the new National Assembly leadership next month.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, Kawu showered praises on the president-elect’s decision on the election of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively, describing him as a true democrat.
He said, “the APC can, after the emergence of the presiding officers, zone the principal positions since that falls exclusively within the power of the party or that of its caucuses in the National Assembly.
“As a three-term member of the House, and principal officer for eight years, I know that history has shown that all attempts by presidency or the ruling party to impose their stooges as leaders of the National Assembly have been unsuccessful.
“By deciding not to impose leadership on the lawmakers in the 8th Assembly, Buhari has once again proven to Nigerians that he is an honest, sincere and patriotic leader, who puts the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians over and above any other interest.
“Both senators and House of Representatives members should be allowed to elect leaders of their choice. The two presiding officers of senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives are not party positions, which is why all members should participate in the elections,” he stated.
