House of Representatives member, Mr. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has emerged as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives after securing the endorsement of 61 out of the 81 minority lawmakers in the Green Chamber.
The nomination, signed by lawmakers from various opposition parties, was formally submitted to the Speaker of the House on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, paving the way for his formal recognition as leader of the opposition caucus on the floor of the House tomorrow by Speaker AAbass Tajudeen.
Ugochinyere’s emergence follows the resignation of the immediate past Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, who stepped down from the position after serving as the leader of the opposition bloc in the House.
Chinda, a ranking lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had played a prominent role in coordinating minority lawmakers and articulating opposition positions on key national issues during his tenure.
His resignation created a vacancy that triggered consultations among opposition lawmakers over the choice of a successor capable of unifying the diverse minority caucus.
The endorsement of Ugochinyere drew support from lawmakers across several opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), Accord, African People’s Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His overwhelming backing is being interpreted as a strong vote of confidence in his ability to provide leadership to the minority caucus at a time of significant political realignments within the National Assembly and across the country’s opposition landscape.
A vocal lawmaker and chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ugochinyere has been one of the most visible opposition figures in the House, frequently engaging on issues of governance, electoral reforms, constitutional matters, and public accountability.
Speaking on behalf of the lawmakers who endorsed the nomination, Hon. Oluwaseyi Sowumi of the NDC, Lagos State, commended members of the minority caucus for their unity and commitment to strengthening the opposition’s role in the legislature.
He also expressed appreciation to colleagues in the ruling party and the Speaker of the House for their support and encouragement throughout the process.
Observers say the emergence of Ugochinyere signals a new phase for the minority caucus as opposition lawmakers seek greater cohesion in advancing legislative alternatives, strengthening oversight functions, and holding the executive accountable.
With the nomination already before the Speaker, attention is now focused on the formal announcement of the minority leadership structure, a move expected to consolidate Ugochinyere’s position as the leading voice of the opposition in the House of Representatives.
His emergence comes as the National Assembly prepares to tackle major policy debates and political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections, placing the new Minority Leader at the centre of efforts to shape the opposition’s legislative strategy in the coming months.
