These are not the best of times for landlords and residents in Naiyeju, Ajiboro, Salvation, Olalekan Onigbinde, and Ayelabowo in Afenifere Community Development Area (CDA) of Igando, Lagos, following outflow of effluents from Lagos State School of Nursing and the Igando General Hospital.

The damaged drainages in the area have also added to their plight as the effluents flow freely on the streets and neighbourhoods. Consequently, members of the community have called on Lagos State government to come to their aid by constructing drainages, to avoid further disaster in the area.

They also urged the government to prevail on the School of Nursing and Igando General Hospital to stop channelling effluents into the streets. When The Guardian visited the area yesterday, labourers engaged by residents were seen digging temporary drainages to ensure free passage of water.

Some of the residents lamented that the flooding has caused grave damage to their properties, while several appeals to the government have not yielded the desired results.

Speaking with The Guardian during the visit, one of the community leaders, Olajide Adewehinwo, lamented that flooding is a major challenge in the area.

“We have been battling flood challenges for nine years. We have written to the government but nothing has been done.
“The government sent some delegation, including the management of the School of Nursing to assess the situation but that’s all.

“Two weeks ago, we met with the engineer in charge of the school building project who promised to look into it. We have to resort to self-help to make a temporary drainage. We appreciate the state government for the choice of Igando for the nursing school but we cannot continue to suffer. We appeal to the government to construct drainage measures to tackle the problem of flooding.

Efforts to get the government’s reaction proved abortive as calls put through to the Public Affairs Director, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, were not picked.
