A severe flood hit the Mushin area of Lagos yesterday after hours of heavy rainfall, leaving roads impassable and businesses badly affected.
The flooding caused significant disruption to daily activities as residents and business owners counted their losses.
In some of the worst-hit areas, vehicles were seen struggling to pass through waterlogged roads, while traders and motorists lamented huge financial losses.
A driver, Yinka Yakuub, said the rain had disrupted his work. “The road was blocked, the gutters were also blocked. The rain didn’t allow us to enjoy ourselves. We are begging the government to come and help us to clear the gutters. If the gutters are free, then the water will flow easily which will not cause a flood,” he said.
Another motorist, Kehinde Kareem, also expressed his frustration. “Once a small rain falls, all this place is filled up and blocked. If the gutter is not moving freely when it’s filled up, a flood will cover the entire place. This affects our work. We are begging the government to do something about it.”
For traders, the experience was equally devastating. A petty trader, Nimota Kareem, revealed her business had suffered major losses. “I have been out since 11:00 a.m. The flood was so severe here. Goods worth N50,000 were lost to flood today,” she said.
The residents called on the Lagos State government to urgently clear the blocked drainage systems in Mushin to prevent future occurrences.
