River Niger: NIWA restates commitment to moving goods through dredged channel
Managing Director, of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moughalu, has restated their commitment to moving goods through the dredged channel of River Niger, assuring that the authority is ever ready to encourage and assist companies, as well as transporters to distribute their wares across the country.
Moughalu, who described the exercise as a welcome development, yesterday, in Onitsha, urged businessmen to take advantage of the dredged channel to keep it busy, and at the same time generate money for Federal Government.
Meanwhile, NIWA’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Jibril Darda’u, also said that the authority is ensuring safe movement of goods to Onitsha River Port, insisting that the movement of goods along the River channel is total and not negotiable.
In a statement yesterday, Darda’u disclosed that NIWA is already collaborating with some Nigerian companies, including West African Ceramic Limited, in the movement of goods through the dredged channel of the River Niger, using its tugboats, piloted by NIWA officials with escort from Inland Waterways Police for adequate security.
The statement reads: “In a recent development, the West African Ceramic Limited, a leading manufacturer of tiles in Nigeria, under the brand name, ‘Royal,’ in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, has successfully moved 22 trailer loads of goods (tiles) to Onitsha River Port.
“In the exercise, supervised by Darda’u and the Public Relations Officer of West African Ceramic Limited, Hassan Ilugbami, the company took advantage of the dredged channel of River Niger in conveying the tiles.
“On returning, the barge carried laterite, a major raw material for the production of tiles that is worth 27 trailer loads back to Ajaokuta.
