Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Council of Rivers State, Vincent Job, has urged the Federal government and other relevant authorities to make management of flood risks a top priority.
Job, who spoke about the recurring flood in the Orashi regions in the state, also urged government to remove the bottlenecks in dredging and ensure sustainable mechanisms towards flooding.
The council boss told The Guardian that several communities affected by the 2022 flooding were yet to recover from the devastating effects, adding that the predictions and warnings by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) that there will be heavier rainfall this year has sent panic among the people.
He said: “As a Council, we are very much worried, the suffering we encountered last year was quite enormous. A lot of people have not recovered from the damages, destruction and ill health. When we were growing up, such flood challenges happened once every 10 and 12 years , but now it is frequent, so we are worried.
“The Federal Government should come in to assist in bringing a lasting and sustainable solution to the flood menace, last year the state government worked with us and assisted us in giving succour to the flood victims and we are also partnering with the state government again this year.” He noted that the ecological funds should be released and prudently utilized towards addressing the needs of the people.
“Already, as a Council, we are not relaxing, there are plans to ensure we give succour, We have started building and revamping relief camps, buying foams and mattresses as well as stocking food items.
“We are willing to embrace partnership with oil companies, organisations, individuals towards tackling the flood problems “ he added
Similarly, President General of Egi Peoples Assembly (EPA) , an apex organisation in the council, Ugochukwu Erikooha, said: “This is the time for government to show action, love, show leadership not when people are displaced by flood, they start to bring indomie.”
He disclosed that a host company in the area ,Total Energies, assisted the people last year and promised to bring measures that will ensure a lasting solution to the flood. He, however, said some bottlenecks from the government were impeding the process.
