The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of officers involved in a viral assault incident.
The officers were accused of brutally assaulting a citizen who refused to pay a ₦1 million bribe demanded over an expired tinted permit.
According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and has assigned the CP Monitoring Team to handle the matter.
The officers have been taken into custody and are currently facing disciplinary action.
Recall that the victim, Cletus Emmanuel Onyekachi, alleged that the officers stopped him along Igbo-Etche Road, demanded a bribe, and became violent when he refused to pay.
The officers allegedly assaulted Onyekachi, his brother, a friend, and a female passenger. A viral video of the incident showed the officers beating and slapping Onyekachi, with one officer using a whip to inflict injuries.
SP Iringe-Koko assured the public that the command remains committed to upholding professionalism and accountability in policing.
She emphasised that the outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.
She added that the Rivers State Police Command is committed to promoting the rule of law and ensuring accountability among its personnel.
