Rotarians plant tree, beautify Lagos school
As Rotarians across the world mark the World Tree Planting Day with month-long events, members of the Rotary Club of Ewutuntun, District 9110, have beautified Mafoluku Grammar School, in Oshodi, with flowers to stem global warming, preserve the environment and propagate the life-saving benefits of trees to humanity.
President of the club, Dele Adegbola, said the project was in line with the new focus of Rotary International.
“Because of the emergency of climate change, Rotary International has expanded its areas of focus to accommodate what is now called ‘Supporting the Environment.’ The decision to plant trees inside the premises of the school is also consistent with Rotary’s support for basic education.
“An old Chinese proverb says, ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.’ As Rotarians, we are giving back to mother earth by ensuring we do all we can to preserve the environment,” he said.
The event was witnessed by the club’s Assistant Governor, Chester Apasi; District Chairman, Planet Earth Committee, Jellily Efedi, represented by the committee’s secretary, Akinbobola Henry; principal of the school, Mrs Ayanleke; Vice Principal, Mrs Adeniji, and some community leaders.
Different types of trees – step tree, queen palm, almond, masquerade, Single ASSORA, West Indies and others were planted at strategic areas of the school. The entrance of the school was also beautified and adorned with Rotary colours.
