About 1,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed at the palace of the Ooni of Ife by the Rotary Club of Omole Golden of District 9110, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ile-Ife, under Rotary International District 9125, as part of efforts to roll back malaria in the ancient kingdom of Ile-Ife.

At the event, which took place at the weekend, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, threw his weight behind Rotary International for its services to humanity. The monarch praised Rotary International for being at the forefront of humanitarian service worldwide, and fighting causes such as Polio and malaria across developing counties of the world.

Observing that health is wealth, Oba Ogunwusi urged his subjects not to sell the insecticide-treated nets, but to use it in the prevention of mosquito bites that could trigger malaria, a scourge ravaging the African continent.

He said: “It is when you are healthy that you can plan, it is when you are healthy that you can look after your family or go to your farm or work. The Rotary International has brought us mosquito nets, they want to promote good health and wellbeing. Let us all support them by using the net to prevent malaria. It is when we do this that we are telling them thank you.”

The District 9110 District Governor, Patrick Ikehloa, said the roll back malaria is a global grant programme, which the club decided to bring to Ile-Ife as part of ways to associate with and support the king, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Omole Golden.

The Rotarians and other health volunteers also conducted a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) for the detection of malaria, and those who tested positive were immediately treated and given the mosquito nets.

In her health talk at the event, Rotarian Yemisi Balogun urged the people to always ensure a clean environment in order to get rid of mosquitoes. She equally counseled against self-medication and the consumption of herbs, many of which she said might be injurious to their health.
