
The Rotary Club of Umuahia (District 9142) in the Abia State capital has disclosed plans to embark on three projects valued at N36 million.The projects are intended to transform lives in communities within the district
The club’s president, Temitope Nnaomah, disclosed this during her installation as the 44th president for the 2024/2025 year. The banker-turned-entrepreneur, who succeeded Mr Irem Okafor Kalu, said the projects included renovating the Newborn Incubation Centre at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for about N12 million.
Others are the provision of a solar-powered water borehole and a 10-room block toilet facility at Awuja community in Bende Local Council, which will cost about N22 million, and the completion of a three-room block toilet at Ugwunchara Primary School, which is estimated to cost about N2 million.
She solicited the cooperation and financial support of all to enable the club to “make a tangible difference in the lives of our fellow citizens by creating a healthier, more sustainable and more prosperous community”.
In his valedictory speech, Kalu predicted that Nnaomah would do well because she has all it takes to succeed. While accepting the mantle of leadership during the event held at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, and themed: ‘ The Magic of Rotary”, Nnaomah said she was humbled and grateful for the confidence reposed in her, noting that the position also comes with immense responsibilities.
In a keynote address entitled “The Power of Service in Leadership”, the state’s Deputy Governor Chief Ikechukwu Emetu said the power of service in leadership “is about prioritising the needs of others and fostering a culture of empathy, collaboration, and mutual support.
Represented by Mr Ernest Otuonye, the deputy governor added that servant leaders focus on empowering their teams, building strong relationships, and creating an environment where everyone can grow and thrive. He said that “it is a transformative approach that revolutionises the way leaders think, act, and inspire others.”
Speaking to The Guardian on the sidelines, on behalf of the family of the Rotary president, her husband, Mr Uche Nnaomah, said the family will give her all the support needed to succeed.
