With hearts full of gratitude, beneficiaries of the Rotary e-Club of Maryland Ikeja’s Empowerment Initiative gathered for a truly life-changing experience, one that has sparked new beginnings and restored hope for a brighter future.
The empowerment programme, described as the club’s flagship Star Project, was conceived by the Club President, Joyce Mary Seyi-Idowu, as a strategic response to unemployment and economic challenges.
As an E-Club within Rotary International District 9111, the initiative adopted a transparent and inclusive process, using a Google Form circulated across clubs in the district to reach intending applicants.
Past District Governor, Omotunde Lawson, disclosed that 89 applications were received, out of which 52 beneficiaries were selected.
She further revealed that the project, valued at approximately N10 million, provided essential vocational tools including 26 sewing machines, 10 grinding machines, nine hairdryers, five vulcanising machines, one industrial gas cooker with 12.5 kg cylinder and one welding machine.
According to her, the initiative stands out as a unique intervention aimed at equipping entrepreneurs and skilled artisans with the tools needed for self-reliance and sustainability.
Representing the District 9111 Governor, Prince Henry Akinyele, District Governor-elect, Bukola Bakare, commended the leadership of the club for extending its impact across all clubs in District 9111, describing it as a true reflection of Rotary’s commitment to humanitarian service and “Service above self.”
She expressed honour in presenting the items and encouraged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the equipment to ensure long-term sustainability.
In her remarks, Past Assistant Governor, Ezenne Obiora, applauded the United President for organising a laudable initiative targeted at improving economic growth.
She urged beneficiaries to use the machines effectively to expand their businesses and encouraged them to extend similar gestures to others in their communities.
Obiora further advised beneficiaries to spread awareness about Rotary, noting that more opportunities would be available in subsequent phases.
In a remarkable move to further expand the reach of this impactful initiative, three non-administrative staff of the Rotary District 9111 were also empowered with vocational equipment to support their personal skills and livelihoods.
They include Fadeke Esther, Facility Maintenance Officer; Akorede Mopelola of the District Canteen; and Fatima Damilola Quadri, District 9111 Radio OAP.
The highlight of the event remained the heartfelt testimonies from beneficiaries, many of whom expressed deep gratitude for what they described as a life-changing opportunity.
Amehfuna Precious, a hairstylist from OPIC, shared her excitement, noting that a Rotarian introduced her to the opportunity. “I still can’t believe I now own my own hairdryer. I am very, very happy. Thank you, Rotary E-Club of Maryland,” she said.
Mrs. Maduka Chikodi, a widow from Anambra State, expressed appreciation for receiving a grinding machine. “I applied immediately because I cook in large quantities and have needed this for a long time. Thank you, Rotary. God bless you all,” she said.
Daniel Taiwo Oluwaseun from Abeokuta described the support as a turning point in his life. Having completed his apprenticeship in vulcanising, he now has the tools to begin his business. “This will help me provide for my family. God bless everyone in Rotary who made this possible,” he said.
Hassan Adeshola Isiaka, a food processor from Ado-Odo Ota, also expressed gratitude for receiving a grinding machine. “I am truly grateful. May God bless Rotary E-Club of Maryland and all Rotary clubs,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the District 9111 staff beneficiaries, Damilola Quadri expressed heartfelt appreciation to PDG Omotunde Lawson, President JoyceMary Seyi-Idowu, and all members of the Rotary E-Club of Maryland for their compassion and dedication to humanity.
“As a beneficiary myself, this initiative is more than empowerment—it is a lifeline and a renewed opportunity. My heart is filled with gratitude,” she said.
In his closing remarks, the Charter President Rotary E-club of Maryland expressed sincere appreciation to the Club President, Past District Governor, District Governor-Elect, sponsors, Rotarians, media team, and all beneficiaries for their contributions toward the success of the event.
Indeed, the Rotary E-Club of Maryland has once again demonstrated that through compassion, collaboration, and purposeful service, lives can be transformed and communities uplifted.
