About 1,500 children living in Makoko and environs were on Christmas day feted by Community of Sant’Egidio to ensure they have a memorable celebration. The children, who had enough to drink and eat, were entertained with music after their meal at the St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba.
Coordinator of the group, Mrs. Catherine Adebowale, said the Christmas party is an annual event in the last 10 years by her association to ensure children of the poor are not left out of the yuletide celebration.
One of the children, Maurice Prosper, commended the organisers noting that many of them would have not had a memorable Christmas if not for the party organized by the group. He said he would have been at home not merrying but reading or doing something else because his parents do not have the means to celebrate the season.
Also, to bring the joy of Christmas to children and young adults with special needs, the Rotary Club of Lagos Island District 9110 and its affiliate, Rotaract Club, visited Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care and Children’s Home in Yaba, Lagos.
At the event, Vice President of the club, Vipul Agrawal, said the visit was part of Rotary’s way of putting smiles on the faces of the needy in society. The club’s president, Raj Kumar Gulati, in a statement, also affirmed the club’s commitment to serving the poor, disadvantaged and needy.
“It is a continuation of other projects like ‘VISON 2020’, which provides free eye cataract operations. Rotary Club of Lagos Island also leads in conducting blood donation camps, contributing more than 500 units of blood in past six months.”Gulati thanked all the donors, volunteers and well-wishers who selflessly serve communities, and assured of continued service to humanity.
