Salvation Army solicits funds for National Appeal Week

TO meet its original objective of bringing succour to the poor, destitute and hungry, the Salvation Army has appealed to the general public to make donations at its various ministries nationwide, towards its Annual Fund Raising Appeal, tagged the National Appeal Week, which is set to hold in the first week of October.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army, Nigeria Territory, Colonel Victor Leslie said “we have decided to tell our story by appealing to Nigerians to help us generate local funds by donating to our cause, to provide timely response to emergency relieves.”

Leslie noted lack of funds as a major challenge of the army, “as the complexity and magnitude of the needs makes it almost impossible to meet them as we like to.”

Against the backdrop of the ongoing insurgency in the northern part of the country, Chief Secretary of the army, Lt. Colonel Friday Ayanam also said in the last few months, they have provided both food and non-food items, care and support to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) at the BON- DONG camp in Kaduna State, and still have plans to visit other IDP camps in Abuja.

Leslie also pointed out that they do not have huge partnership with governments now, but commended Akwa Ibom State for partnering with them to renovate some school facilities. He said they hope to partner with governments at all levels in the near future.
