Sanwo-Olu, Awosika advocate care for visually-impaired persons

Board Chairman, Access Bank, Ajoritsedere Awosika and the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, yesterday called for access to inclusive, technology-driven learning for the blind and visually impaired persons in Nigeria.

Awosika, who was the keynote speaker at the stakeholders conference for the 70th anniversary of the Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB), held at the vocational centre, FIIRO road, Oshodi, said history had shown that blindness should not be a barrier to greatness, citing the example of musicians like Stevie Wonder, innovators like Louis Braille, among others.  She added that when opportunity meets determination, disability is transformed into extraordinary ability.

According to Awosika, who spoke on the theme, Vision Without Eyes: Striving for Excellence, the theme reminds mankind that true vision resides in the mind, the heart, and the will, not just in the physical eyes.

She said the government must strengthen legislation and enforcement to guarantee the rights of people with disabilities.  In her contribution, Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Oyinda Ogunsanwo Emmanuel, said: “Over the decades, FNSB has supported countless visually impaired individuals in realising their goals and aspirations.

“In today’s world, we have come to the realization that disability is not inability. Therefore, no physical challenge should incapacitate anyone from achieving great things in life. This makes the theme for this Stakeholders’ Forum, “Vision without Eyes; Striving for Excellence”, both timely and apt.”
