Sanwo-Olu declares Lekki, Ikoyi tollgates free to motorists today

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said for seven hours today, motorists driving through the Lekki and the Ikoyi-Lekki link bridge tollgates would not pay tolls.

The governor said this yesterday while on a tour of the Victoria Island-Ajah axis to see how to check traffic gridlock and flooding in the area. Sanwo-Olu said from 6:30a.m. to 9:30a.m. and 4:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. motorists would through the toll points when paying.

According to the governor, motorists will not pay because the state government wants to know where the traffic around the toll gates would be transferred to as the state makes efforts to come up with strategy to tackle traffic gridlock on the Victoria Island-Ajah axis.

To ensure free flow of vehicles around the Ikoyi-Lekki link bridge, Sanwo-Olu said by October 1, the toll gate on the bridge would be fully electronic, allowing only electronic payment. He added that lay-bys would be constructed on both sides of Ajah Bus-stops to take away commercial buses obstructing vehicular movement in that axis.

The governor, who also made a stop over at the Abraham Adesanya area of Ajah, said the drainage around the area would be reconstructed to be able to take water into the lagoon. He was optimistic that the effort would solve the perennial flooding often experience in that area. About a week ago, many residents of the Abraham Adesanya Estate and its environ accessed their homes using canoe as the place was highly flooded.

The governor was also the trauma and burns centre of Gbagada General Hospital where he commiserated with the victims of the Ijegun explosion. He encouraged and comforted them promising that the state government would continue to take care of the hospitalised victims for free.

Sanwo-olu however said the state government and residents must continue to learn from incidents like this.
