Assembly begins screening today, plans to review 2023 budget performance

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sent another list of 18 commissioner-nominees to the House of Assembly for screening after the rejection of 17 nominees sent previously.

The House will, today, commence the screening of the second batch of the nominees. The list includes Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, Oluseun Oriyomi Osiyomi, Prof. Akionla Emanuel Abayomi, Olaleye Odusote, Omobola Wahab Fashila, Folasade Ambrose.

Others are Akinyemi Bankole, Sam Egube, Suleiman Akibu, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, Barakat Bakare, Olugbenga Omotosho, Mosopelu George, Yekini Agbaje, Olamide Olayinka, Abayomi Oriyomi, Iyabode Ayoola and Shola Giwa.

In a letter sent to the House, the governor, who commended the commitment of members of the Assembly over the assessment of the nominees, said: “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to you and all the esteemed members of the House for your diligence and commitment to duty in the recent clearance of the 22 nominees presented for screening. Your rigorous assessment of these nominees is in adherence to the constitutional obligation, which demonstrated your dedication to ensuring competence and effective executives.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to re-present a list of nominees that includes the balanced selection of previously presented and new individuals. This list represents a broad political spectrum and diverse background, reflecting the rich diversity of our beloved state. Each of the nominees has the necessary qualifications, experience and education to serve the people of Lagos State efficiently and effectively. I believe their potential will bring fresh insight and innovative ideas to the table, contributing to the overall growth and development of the state.”

He urged the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa and members of the House to perform the constitutional duty and accept the nominees for clearance for the successful formation of the state executive.

Meanwhile, Obasa has urged the screening committee, under the chairmanship of the Chief Whip, Mojeed Alabi, to commence the screening and get back to the House on Thursday.

In another development, the House of Assembly has resolved to review the performance of the 2023 budget in preparation for the presentation of the 2024 budget estimate by the governor. The Speaker urged the committee for the budget review, headed by Sa’ad Olumo, to ensure a proper review and make its report available to the House.
