Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has emphasised the need for the society to also prioritise the boy child, ensuring that the boys grow into responsible and empowered individuals.
Sanwo-Olu stated this at the Sonnex rPET Recycling plant in Ikorodu in celebration of 2025 Boy Child Initiative, organised in conjunction with Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Ltd, where 200 boys were empowered on mentorship, life skills, and community development.
The General Manager rPet, Hakan Turkmen, in his remarks, stressed the importance of empowering the boy child with sustainable practices, noting that this year’s theme, ‘Advancing Circular Economy and Recycling’, highlighted the importance of sustainability in economic development.
He said: “As a company committed to sustainable development and community impact, Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Ltd actively supports initiatives that equip young boys with education, vocational skills, and opportunities for growth. We believe in nurturing future leaders by fostering an environment that encourages responsibility, confidence, and meaningful contributions to society.

“Sonnex rPET Recycling Plant is at the forefront of the plastic recycling revolution in West Africa, committed to addressing the region’s growing plastic waste challenge. Our state-of-the-art facility is designed to recycle PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) waste into high-quality food-grade recycled products, including rPET flakes and bottle-to-bottle pellets, contributing to a sustainable circular economy.”
He noted that during the visit, the First Lady and the boys engaged with the team, gaining valuable insights into the recycling processes and how Sonnex transforms PET plastic into food-grade resin.
“This experience reinforced the importance of sustainable practices and the opportunities available within the recycling industry. We remain committed to driving positive change through recycling, job creation, and mentorship—ensuring that young boys in our community have the tools and opportunities to build a brighter future,” he added.
