Senate President Bukola Saraki, has urged the Federal Government to allow free access to public facilities. This followed its refusal to allow a presidential aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to use the Eagle Square to make his declaration.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki said the Eagle Square is a public facility that belongs to all Nigerians. He condemned the last minute cancellation of the approval earlier granted to Kwankwaso for his announcement.

Saraki said the belated cancellation of the permit was also a wrong message about the tolerance level in our politics. He added that the development has raised a red flag about the safe conduct of next year’s election.

“That square belongs to all Nigerians, because it was built with public funds. We hope that this is not what we would be seeing as we approach the 2019 general elections,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kwankwanso’s supporters took up major streets in Abuja yesterday in support for his declaration. Most of the supporters, wearing red caps and shirts, were seen walking along the streets in large groups with their buses parked on the walkways.

This caused major traffic gridlock in Jabi, and Utako district.Part of the crowd also sought shelter under trees along the streets, even as others rode on horsebacks to drum support for Kwankwanso.
