Federal government has been tasked by private sector players to scale up efforts and rethink strategy towards realising the Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs), 2030.

Chief Executive Officer, (CEO), of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, (NESG), Dr. Tayo Aduloju, said government should commit to specifics in terms of interventions and efforts towards meeting the SDGs which is already gone halfway. He stated this at an interministerial breakout session titled Child Wellbeing during the 29th plenary of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, (NESG29), themed ‘Half Point to 2030: Rethinking the Strategy Towards Achieving the SDG’s, yesterday in Abuja.

He notes that getting policy makers and implementers to commit to a stand alone compact on the child with regards to the realisation of the SDGs, is critical to channeling resources and policies in the sector.

“We feel that a stand-alone compact with the child at least commits federal government to the child in terms of resource commitment, which is the budget, policy commitment which is the priorities and reporting commitment among others.

Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, observed that despite challenges in the sector, government is harnessing investment towards grassroots investment in primary education, teachers training and the establishment of classrooms among others.

He said to realise the SDGs target for the Nigerian child, “We will harness investment towards grassroots primary education because the future is now therefore the Nigerian child cannot wait.

“Training of teachers is also going to be done alongside consideration of security issues under the safe schools initiative.”
The minister said efforts are being redoubled to ensure that despite reaching the hallway mark of the SDGs, Nigeria is able to realise the targets.

UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, said that ok ne be in every four Nigerian child does not understand what they read
According to her, for quick wins and accelerated result at local levels, investment must be well target, monitored for effectiveness and result

“We need to understand that the quality and access of education is really hurting and bleeding and we must have a solid base for sustainability.”
