Mr Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, on Monday warned motorists to desist from assaulting corps marshals on duty.

Ajayi, who gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka, said that motorist must obey both regular and special marshals on duty.

He advised them to desist from resorting to self help.

Ajayi said that the call became necessary as the command enters the crucial stage of the “Ember’’ months patrol.

He said the FRSC personnel were empowered by law to use minimum force to secure the arrest of any errant driver.

He added that command had good understanding with other security agencies, especially the police for maximum sanity on the roads.

“Any motorist who tries to take the law into his or her own hands will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Every driver has a duty to stop when an officer demands that he or she does so. It is wrong to exhibit stubbornness or fight with the officers.

“They have the right to use minimum force to secure the arrest of any errant driver.

“There are channels of complaint, we are here to protect you and if you think you are treated unjustly by any officer, you are advised to report to the command.

“And I will personally handle the case on its merit,’’ he said.

Ajayi disclosed that the sector had in the last three months through its mobile courts convicted no fewer than 596 motorists for various offences.

He said that 616 traffic offenders were arrested within the period.

“The offenders were tried in six units of the command, while 20 motorists were found not guilty of their charges,’’ Ajayi said.

Releasing the statistic of arrests by the command, he said 234 offenders were arrested in September and 259 in October.

The command said that 123 offenders were arrested in November.

Ajayi said the increase in the number of arrest and conviction was due to increased patrol activities in the state.

He said that the spate and fatality from accidents had declined.

The sector commander, urged motorists to drive safely and be alive to celebrate Christmas.
