The Nigerian Senate has given approval for a bill to establish the Nigerian Coast Guard to successfully advance to its second reading.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Wasiu Eshilokun (APC-Lagos), presented the lead debate on its general principles during Tuesday’s plenary session.

He explained that the proposed legislation is aimed at creating the Nigerian Coast Guard, which will be responsible for securing the country’s maritime zones and supporting the Nigerian Navy in times of conflict.

Eshilokun said that the bill is designed to enhance Nigeria’s maritime security, focusing on regional coastal security and adherence to international maritime standards. It aims to enforce relevant laws within Nigeria’s maritime zones and ensure the safety of lives and property at sea.

He described the timing of the bill as strategic, aligning with the current administration’s development agenda, which seeks to expand economic opportunities.

“The maritime environment presents numerous opportunities that can aid the government’s diversification efforts, highlighting the need for robust security in this vital sector,” he stated.

Senator David Umeh (LP-Anambra) supported the bill, advocating for clearly defined duties for the Coast Guard to ensure effective collaboration with customs and the Navy.

Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP-FCT) expressed her endorsement, noting that a viable maritime economy requires a dedicated Coast Guard. “We lose approximately N35 billion annually to illegal fishing, which could be mitigated with a proper Coast Guard,” she pointed out.

Senator Sunday Karimi (APC-Kogi) highlighted the urgent need for a Coast Guard amid rising global terrorism and threats to maritime security.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, affirmed that the bill would bolster Nigeria’s territorial integrity and enhance naval defense capabilities. He then referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Marine Transport for further deliberation, with a report due in four weeks.
