Senate to take over Edo Assembly in one week
Nigerian Senate Tuesday resolved to take over the functions of Edo state House of Assembly within a week.
The taking over of the Assembly is however depending on whether the State governor, Godwin Obaseki, complies with another leg of the resolution which mandated him to issue a fresh proclamation for what it called a proper inauguration of Edo House of Assembly.
Adopting a report by presented by its adhoc committee that investigated the crisis in the Edo Assembly, the Senate claimed that the processes leading to the inauguration of the Assembly on the 17th of June, 2019 were improper and a breach of global Parliamentary practice.
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, threw out a constitutional point of order by Emmanuel Okerjev (PDP, Benue State) which sought to advise the Senate against the resolution.
Okerjev cited section 105 of the constitution and stated that it never mandated the governor to sponsor newspaper advertorials to publicise his proclamation.
