The Senate yesterday supported the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) agitators by asking the Federal Government to ensure the release of the over 200 girls abducted almost two years ago from Federal Government Girls College, Chibok in Borno State.

The Senate intervention was sequel to adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC Lagos Central), which among others sought to encourage the Senate to back women across the world on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Ruling on the motion, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, declared that it was time the National Assembly took up the challenge of ensuring that the Federal Government rescues the Chibok girls, adding that by doing so the legislature would have added its voice to the international clamour for the promotion of womanhood as well as celebration of women.

Saraki said: “I think as lawmakers we must play our role on the issue of abduction of girls as it is happening in our country. We must take it as an agenda of this 8th Senate, prevention and even when they do arise to see that we play our role to see particularly to the rescue of the Chibok girls that are still there. We must continue and not give up in seeing that we bring to the recovery and release of the girls.”

He said the legislature would not hesitate in ensuring that the poor representation of women became a thing of the past.

Adopting a four-prayer motion, the Senate felicitates with Nigerian women on this year’s International Women’s Day celebration.

It urged the Federal Government to use all its powers to bring back the Chibok and other abducted girls, unite them with their parents and stop heinous crime of girls abduction in Nigeria.

The upper chamber also urged government at all levels to put adequate security in schools to ensure safety of children, especially the girl-child in all boarding schools.
