The Senate yesterday warned against the use of Nigeria’s cyber space in posting videos and pictures that could trigger religious and ethnic crisis in the country.

The warning according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), followed a point of order raised by the Chairman, Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Dino Melaye, at plenary.

Melaye was reacting to photographs of killings from other countries, allegedly posted on the social media, purported that they took place in Southern Kaduna.

He said that there were many videos and pictures from a myopic angle which Muslims and Christians preachers have been reacting to.He said those posting such videos and pictures were achieving their aims because they had succeeded in setting religious leaders against themselves.

He cautioned that if not curtailed on time, the situation could lead to crisis that would further deepen the negative effect of recession on Nigerians.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said that though the lawmakers could not debate on the matter because it was a point of order and not a motion, the enormity of the observation demanded that the senate issued a warning.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee chairman and former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has warned against politicizing the problem engendered by the Fulani herdsmen attacks and killings, saying it was capable of setting the country on fire.

He cautioned that Nigerians must come together to proffer solution to the lingering crisis in the region instead of imputing political motives to the violence.

According to him, the upheaval that erupted in the area was unfortunate, warning that both government and people must not politicize this issue.

The PDP chief who lamented the escalation of reports on the violence, also commended the manner leaders and other stakeholders have stood up to handle the problem.

Similarly, the National Association of Seadogs wants an end to the killings in Kaduna. While charging the government to apprehend, prosecute and penalise the perpetrators, the group said president Mohammadu Buhari and the Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, should initiate meaningful dialogue and negotiations with stakeholders to end the wanton shed of blood.

The group cautioned politicians to resist the temptation of politicizing the violence in order to avoid escalation and create further instability in the country.

The group said it is extremely important that justice is generally seen to be done, adding that perpetrators of the recent and ongoing violence were held accountable.
