Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and youth advocate, Isaac Balami, has condemned what he describes as politically motivated attacks on Seyi Tinubu following his recent tour of northern Nigeria.

Balami, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, suggested that the backlash against Tinubu’s outreach efforts was linked to growing calls for him to contest the Lagos State governorship election. Instead of criticism, he argued, Tinubu deserved commendation for his longstanding humanitarian work and commitment to national unity.

“I would have preferred to write him privately to express my gratitude, but I have chosen to speak publicly so that misled Nigerians can see the truth,” Balami said.

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has been involved in charitable activities for over a decade, long before his father assumed office, Balami pointed out. Tinubu’s recent Ramadan visit to the North, where he engaged with Muslim communities and provided support to the less privileged, was consistent with his established track record.

“What exactly is wrong if the son of the President reaches out to those in need or shares moments with northern Muslims during their prayerful time?” Balami asked. “He started these Iftar reach-outs 10 to 15 years ago when his father was not the President. Are people saying he should stop simply because of his father’s position?”

He also dismissed claims that Tinubu’s efforts were politically motivated, arguing that even if they were, they remained a positive contribution.

“Many children of presidents live extravagant lives, but Seyi Tinubu has chosen a different path. Would Nigerians rather he partied around the world while ignoring the needs of his people?” Balami said.

Balami highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to fostering national unity, noting that his business ventures employ a significant number of non-Yoruba staff.

“More than 50 percent of the employees in his organisation are northerners,” Balami said. “His acts of kindness have extended even to those who campaigned against his father. During the 2023 elections, he personally funded the medical treatment of an Obidient youth who had worked against his father’s campaign.”

The former Trade Union Congress (TUC) spokesperson urged Nigerians to appreciate Tinubu’s contributions rather than trivialising them with political sentiments.

“In Nigeria, we love to pull down those who are making an impact. But history will remember Seyi Tinubu for his selflessness, not the distractions of his critics.”

Balami concluded by encouraging Tinubu to remain focused on his philanthropic work, assuring him that his efforts would ultimately be recognised for their true value.

“Nigerians will eventually see the fruits of your labour,” he said. “Do not be discouraged by detractors. Continue your work for the good of the country.”
