Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has alerted the Federal Government on what he described as “food emergency,” following the massive influx of displaced persons sacked by Boko Haram insurgents to camps in the state.

He disclosed that the over 399,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in camps consume 63 tons (12,600 bags) weekly.

Shettima stated this on Tuesday while delivering an address at the first yearly Dialogue on Rebuilding Peace in Borno State, organised by an advocacy group, AOA Global in collaboration with the state government in Abuja.

His words: “As we speak, we are confronted with a crisis of how to feed the huge number of people in IDPs camps in Borno. The military has rescued communities occupied by Boko Haram insurgents. This has led to exodus of IDPs from these communities to emergency camps.”

Giving a breakdown of food supplies to the camps, he said: “About 1,800 bags of 50 kilogrammes of rice are required daily to cater for IDPs across the state. This, however, does not include ingredients and other things required in cooking.”

Shettima further disclosed: “In our regular camps, 984 bags of rice are consumed daily, based on a data tracking matrix of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), working with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).”
