Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) has raised the alarm that many medical doctors are dying silently as a result of their workload, which do not allow them time to monitor their health.

Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) has raised the alarm that many medical doctors are dying silently as a result of their workload, which do not allow them time to monitor their health.

The group noted that inadequate medical personnel in Nigerian hospitals cause this development.

A Consultant at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, Dr. Mohammed Haruna, while speaking at the 2023 World Family Doctor Day, at the weekend, on the theme, ‘Rising Sudden Deaths Among Doctors,’ said: “We need to identify common diseases causing sudden death, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, congestive cardiac failure, which may lead to sudden death.

“Another important killer, in this regard, is the issue of stroke. The other cause is road accidents, which usually kill a lot of doctors and other health care workers.”

Haruna said doctors have tasking and tight work schedules, noting that it is in the process of moving to different places that many doctors sleep off while driving and eventually get involved in accidents.

He noted that the association has urged them to engage the services of personal drivers to curb the menace, which is contributing to the medical doctors exodus from Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the President of the Association, Prof. Musa Dankyau, said Nigeria is currently beset with challenges of limited resources amidst political agitations and insecurity.

“It is in this context that SOFPON and its members, serving in the front lines of healthcare service delivery in Nigeria, have said that without this type of person-centred care, there is no chance of providing high quality health care services to achieve universal health coverage.

“As a society, SOFPON has continued to partner with governments, individuals and groups to ensure our goals are achieved for the benefit of Nigerian families.”
