Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has commended efforts of the state’s law Review Committee in updating the laws in line with international best practices.
The committee, led by the state’s former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Uju Nworgu, was set up by the immediate past administration.
The committee paid a courtesy call on Soludo at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, to submit its report.
While receiving the report, Soludo said that members of the committee have successfully discharged their duty, emphasising the significance of digitising the state’s laws to achieve international acceptability.
In a statement, yesterday, through his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Soludo said: “Part of what we would like to achieve is in line with our vision of making Anambra the digital tribe of Nigeria.
“We will liaise with our learned justices, the Chief Judge, as well as the state House of Assembly to ensure requirements of hardcopy and others will be a basic investment.
“By the time Ndi Anambra get acclimatised with the digital culture, which we are striving to entrench, they would never want to go back to analogue.”
In her speech, Nwogu pointed out that the 1979 Constitution referred to removing some of the laws, which she described as edits; but the committee decided to convert them into laws, and a host of other things it did in the laws.
“It was a tedious job, because the laws are many; but we did all of that, and, in the end, we have completed the revision.
“In the process of revision, in accordance with Revision Law 2019, we had two stages. The first stage is preparing the law, the second stage is to publish and print the law. This is the provision of the law,” she noted.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Sylvia Ifemeje, thanked the committee, and requested that the soft copy of the report be submitted for onward transmission to the state House of Assembly to pass into law.
